I have a 2008 Mustang I just bought with 10,000 miles. I understand the factory rear end is a 3.31 gears. I have been reading and found articles that state if I change to a 3.73 gears, the 0 to 60 times change dramatically. The cost is a little prohibitive though, 250.00 for parts and a few quotes of 500.00 labor. Should I do this? Thanks, Jim Hall

I guess it depends on if your going to race it or not. I was able to order 3.55s in my 07 but have considered going to 3.73s or 4.10s but I don't go to the strip but once or twice a year. I really don't want to sacrifice the gas mileage for twice a year.

Welcome Jim!
I merged the threads so we didn't have duplicates and it would be easier to respond.
I've seen quite a few people on other forums say that there is a noticeable improvement when going to the new gears, it's just a matter of if a few tenths off the 0-60 is worth the cost to you. Is the car stock? I'm not certain on your particular car, but I know that some cars require at least a reflash of the ECU to make the speedo operate correctly, and if it is a non-stock gear ratio, it would require a custom tune.
If you do a lot of highway driving, you will lose mileage, but if you do a lot of city driving it will probably be the roughly the same.
If you are not in a rush to get this mod done, you might be able to check with other club members once the weather is nicer and see if any of them have the 3.73's in their car. Maybe you can get a quick ride to check out the difference then.
Also, got any picts of the new car? =)

Phil, car arrived on Dec 18 on Car Hauler and I put in my barn and covered it up. No photo's yet. The car is completely stock. \Candy Apple with tan leather int. My plans are to add a front spoiler, styling bar , wind screen and side scopes. It's a 5 speed GT Premium. The car looks new. Thanks, Jim

Sounds very cool Jim.
Hopefully the weather will get better soon and you can get some photos taken of it.
Lets see if anyone else on here has done the swap or has the 3:73s already. Hopefully they can give you an idea of the difference from their perspective.

Going to a 3:73 will not only provide better acceleration but you will notice, especially with the automatic, the off idle tip in will be smoother with less stumble. I ran 4:10 on 05 GT and loved them. You do lose a touch of MPG but how many of us buy a Mustang for highway mileage. Around town you will notice an improvement in your driving enjoyment. The speedo will be off but a tuner like the SCT or a Diablo can correct this and make the car run even better with the changes you can make.

Car is a monster out of the hole! You can do the gears yourself if you have the patience. The best way is to pull the rear end and have someone do them on the bench! Make sure you use OEM bearings as the aftermarket bearings, from AM, are not the same thickness and will make the install much harder as you will need to redo the alignment of the gears. You will love the gears!
