WEST MICHIGAN MUSTANG CLUB OCTOBER 10, 2016
The meeting was called to order at 7:00 pm by President, Rick Bishop.
Present were Rick and Cindy Bishop, Neil and Carol Keegstra, Dave and Heidi Mull, Sue Engel, Lori Stolte, Julie Miller, Dave and Cindy Dunn, Gary and Ginny Marble, Ron Wilton, Mark Paulsen, Chris Stawasz, Gene Gibson, Phil Gibson, Scott Broekema, Joe DiLorenzo, Jim and Lynn Trestrail.
Present was one guest: John Evans from Bethesda Farm. This is one of the places we are considering for future support. They are associated with Ottawa Co Mental Health but are an independent operation.
John Evans joined our meeting to explain the mission of Bethesda Farm. It is a farm in Allendale that helps special needs adults. John and his wife, Marcia, are the owners/coordinators and they have two regular volunteers. Other volunteers come on the days of special events.
They mentor and teach special needs adults with all aspects of farming: animal care, gardening and arts and crafts. They originally were open 10-12 hours / week (three years ago.) They are now open 2-3 hours per session, 2 sessions per day and 3 days per week. The goal is to be open for 10 sessions: 2 -3 hour sessions, 5 mornings and 5 afternoons per week.
Their plans for expansion include Phase I which is training the guests to become baristas and then establishing ‘coffee areas’ in everyday waiting areas (i.e.; nail salons) and operate on a donation basis.
Phase II includes the hope to purchase the property next door to open a residential facility. John hopes to bring some guests to our pizza party and set up a coffee bar. The Cook Foundation supports his endeavor. Thanks to that help, they were able to add some heat to the barn and redo the restroom. He thanked us for the opportunity to speak to the club and we thanked him for attending.
Secretary Report: The minutes of the last meeting were read. After a few minor corrections, a motion was made, 2nd and passed to approve the minutes.
Treasury Report: The Treasury report was distributed and explained. Expenses included pre paying for all the 2016-2017 winter events at Remembrance Church. Motion was made, 2nd and approved to accept the Treasury Report.
There was also discussion about the need for and expense of re-establishing WMMC as a non-profit 501-C3 organization. This was not renewed several years ago and it must be renewed. We have researched this extensively over the past year and will hire the person (Mark) who helps MOCSEM (Mustang Owners Club of South East Michigan). A motion was made, 2nd and approved to hire Mark. We will pay his $1500 retainer and he will handle all of the filing costs and do all the paperwork.
